Merry Karnowsky Gallery has made arrangements to have a number of advanced copies of Kent Williams' new book Eklektikos available on the closing day of the artist's exhibition Convergence. Kent will be available from 1 - 4 PM this Saturday, June 18th to chat and dedicate his new monograph.

The gallery is pleased to offer a free exhibition poster for each book purchase, as well as a free poster for the first 35 people in attendance.

Following his much anticipated monograph Amalgam released in 2007, Eklektikos features paintings created over the past four years including a number of the works in the current exhibition.

The U.S. Fund for UNICEF (USF) is raising funds to help
children in Japan impacted by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
This is an unusual decision, as Japan is a donor to UNICEF, not a
recipient of its assistance. However, due to the unprecedented nature
of the epic disaster and its impact on children, resources are going
to be critical in helping provide for the very unique needs of
children. These may include health, development, and protection and
other needs that may have been compromised or disrupted in the wake of
the catastrophe. Giant Robot is proud to join the effort, and have
asked many of our talented friends to create water-themed art to raise
funds to support the efforts of UNICEF.

In addition to raising money by selling artwork, Giant Robot will be
donating the following to UNICEF:

1. Proceeds from the sale of water bottles featuring labels created by
artists and signed by celebrities.
2. Fifty percent of proceeds from Giant Robot’s small restaurant,
gr/eats, on Saturday, March 19.

Whether or not they actively subsume sexuality under the weight of calculated conceptual concerns, the formats of many media favored by contemporary artists tend towards disrupting acts of voyeurism. British artist Sarah Lucas’s jury-rigged assemblages investigate its seedy socio-economic complexities. A.K. Burns and A.L. Steiner’s collaborative, performance-driven videos reformulate the paradigms of its mediation to emphasize its role in community formation. Defused by the enforced deadpan of their documentary sensibilities, it never rises to the glossy surfaces of Mona Kuhn’s at once bared and barren photographs.

By contrast, Kent Williams’ current paintings and drawings derive much of their potency from exemplifying figurative painting’s alluring tactility and coincidental ties to the long history of eroticized representation. Though tempered by comparison, the artist’s stylistic extravagance – manifest in expressionistically smeared, splattered, and abraded paint handling – calls to mind Cecily Brown’s fluent foregrounding of oil’s in-the-flesh immediacy and the cunning ease with which obfuscatory gestures can suggest sexual frisson.

Perhaps the show’s cynosure, “Blonde Natalia in Studio Arrangement”revels in the risqué, if also knowingly retardataire, associations of studio practice. Rendered in a flurry of writhing strokes of oil on linen, its physically idealized (i.e., sexually objectified) male and female models writhe in independent ecstasies against a backdrop of paint cans and orange extension cables – the latter an explicit reminder of the erotic currents snaking through the composition’s literal and figurative middle ground. Indulgent, irresponsible, and wickedly immediate, the painting – suitably representative of the majority of works on view – largely ignores the continuing crisis of representation. Williams’ willful indifference to such intellectual conceits serves to make it sexier.

THE SILK BOOK

Kent Williams: The Silk Book is an over-sized 17 x 17 inch handcrafted artist edition which includes 20 giclée plates, and one original drawing executed especially for each volume. The drawing and the plates are hand-bound in each beautifully crafted book by means of Japanese stab binding, and features mulberry endpapers and covered by Japanese silk and debossed. Each volume is individually proofed by the artist and comes signed, numbered and stamped with the artist's personal hanko signature seal and embossed stamp. Very limited to an edition of 10. $2500 SOLD OUT

DRAW is the largest contemporary drawing exhibition to emerge out of New York City, and features original drawings by more than 350 artists. DRAW will have it’s museum debut at Museo de la Ciudad de México, one of Mexico City’s finest museums. To coincide with the exhibition, the museum will be publishing a book for distribution to contemporary museum bookstores around the world. Carlo McCormick, art writer and curator in the U.S. will be writing an introductory essay for the book. The exhibition is curated by Erik Foss and Curse Mackey. Special Guest Curator for Mexico is Miguel Calderon Museum, Director: Cristina Faesler.

SURVEY SELECT: Narrative Art Exhibition

Celebrating 65 internationally renowned artists, “Survey Select” elevates the narrative tradition of storytelling with original art works, critical writings, workshops, films and community events. Through a unified presentation of painting, drawing, collage and sculpture the public can experience a 8 week museum show for free six days a week from July 15 through September 5 in downtown San Diego.

The exhibition, events and workshops will take place at the Wonder Bread Factory, a 4,000-foot space transformed into a museum located at 1440 Imperial Avenue (14th St. and Imperial). The exhibition will open to the public Friday, July 16, preceded by a private opening Thursday, July 15. Exhibition dates July 15 though September 15, closed on Monday of each week and featuring weekly events.

Hybrid Project

The HYBRID PROJECT is a collaborative partnership between selected local artists and Peter Liashkov. Each participant is invited to select one of Peter’s life size silhouettes, drawn or painted on synskin (a translucent fiberglass paper) and then rework it in his/her own manner. The reworking can take the form of painting, drawing, printing, projection or sculpture.

The first exhibition of these works was held at Blackgate Space in Silverlake, CA in the spring of 2009. In May of 2010 there will be a second exhibition of the Hybrid Project at the Avenue 50 Studio in Highland Park, CA. Kent Williams, Oksana Badrak, Craig Havens, Richard Houston, Nancy Kyes, Rebeca Mendez, Ramon Munoz, Miguel Angel Murillo, Trevor Norris, Pierre Picot, Francesco Siquieiros, J. Michael Walker, Ruth Weisberg, Ingrid Sydow, Pen Tsou, Poli Marishal, Marianne Sadowski and Carlos Flores have agreed to collaborate in this exhibition.

Just finished my painting for an upcoming Bristol, UK group exhibition. This image was conceived back in January and is not only in celebration of the Chinese Year of the Tiger and my birthday, but also in acknowledgment (or a reminder to myself maybe) of the positive attitude or feeling I had going into 2010. I know it's not necessarily an uplifting looking image, but it is, I hope, a viscerally charged representation of the human need for vitality in life (which is not always gotten freely or without scars).

What is becoming of the ‘us’ – the ‘each of us’? Where will all of our technology leave us?

Maybe it’s our detachment from the reality of mass human destruction, or the invited dehumanization of our existence through computers and online interactions. It could be our growing desensitization to cruelty, to violence and to suffering through the television invasion. Whatever it is, it appears we have stopped celebrating, or even acknowledging, the very thing that defines our entire race – our humanity. We are offering it up, as though sacrificially, to the machines we create and worship.

Because of this almost inevitable crisis of self, we find it important again, maybe now more than ever in the history of art making, to cling to our most basic possession – the human form. Call it a quiet revolution – the lone artist embracing the representation of man again – slowly and deliberately turning himself back around to look at himself again. Through the idiosyncratic self, the artists in this show collectively identify the masses: the every man, the other men, the always woman and the sometimes child – their existences, their truths, their triumphs and their failures. These artists remind us that we, the family of man, must not allow ourselves to disappear.

This selected small, though strong group of artists is just a sampling of those who reflect the value that is being put back on the human form. These are artists who reach again to cling to the arms, to the legs and to the hearts of humankind for inspiration, and in doing so, remind us of what we are – the good and the bad – the beautiful restfulness and the harrowing despair.

Not a school or a group or a movement in the –ism sense, these artists are as different at times as they are similar, investigating mankind through courageous and honest contemplation. RASHOMON at the Film Forum

Now playing at New York's Film Forum through June 11th. Pictures sent to me courtesy of my friend, Mark Chiarello – Thanks Mark!

The basis for this stunning new restoration was a 35mm print created in 1962 from the original camera negative; while the print itself was in good physical condition, the source material from which it was made was extremely battered. Due to the extensive printing and handling it had received over its lifetime, many shots were already starting to shrink and warp, and there were numerous scratches, dust, and dirt in the damaged negative. Scanned at 4k resolution, that 47-year-old print has been meticulously cleaned both digitally and by hand, complete with a new, seamless soundtrack.

Okay, I'm excited here – I just finished this painting for Criterion and Janus Films that's being used as the movie poster for the theatrical re-release of Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon! The screening info should be posted by next week at janusfims.com. When I moved to NYC in 1980 for college, Kurosawa's Kagemusha had just been released in the US and was the first foreign subtitled film I had ever gone to a theater to see. After that, I started going to the Japan Society Film House to watch his previous films. All this tied in with so many of my other interests at the time and still does now. I'm told that we'll have copies of the poster available at San Diego Con this summer at the Allen Spiegel Fine Arts booth.

Santa Fe Grand Opening

In Progress 3 (kind of)

Sorry for the delay, but just not much progress. Have been down and out with the flu all week. I did manage to get out of bed and into the studio today and put in just about an hour or so. Not much, but thought I would go ahead and post these so you didn't think I flaked on you. I did respond to a question from Brian from the last post and thought I would restate the answer here, thinking that it would be of interest to some of you. Brian's question was "...do you mix anything into your oils to give it that texture?"

No, generally on my first pass I'm using no or very little medium. The texture is coming about by the fact that I'm loading my brush up pretty heavy with paint and simply laying it down that way. As I work towards the finish, I start using more and more medium, thus resulting in less textured paint (but of course, that initial brushwork telescopes through the proceeding layers.) So, no, I'm using no artificial 'texture' medium. So much of this would be much more understandable and obvious if you could see the original, not just in print or on the screen here.

New Painting Started

Okay–started a new figure painting today and it feels good! This is the first one of Natalia from the drawing session last week. Some of you have asked for a few notes on my process and thinking. Here's a little: Laid in some underpainting with Prussian blue (I know–runs counter to the traditional earth color approach. I've begun the majority of the paintings from the last few years with blue) and then, after giving this a couple of hours to tack-up, I went in with my first pass of the "fairest" flesh color, valued up and down with a compressed range of about five values, pushing in some exaggerated warms and cools. Very little, if any medium with this round–just a touch of Cobalt dryer so all will be dry and ready when i get back to it for an initial glaze (pushing the values back, sort of "keying" my colors together, starting to establish the tone or atmosphere of the environment, and making ready for a second pass.)

Had a great five hour drawing session today with my friend Natalia. It was overcast and rainy so decided to work out of my home instead of the studio – Was one of those days in which it was just nice to be inside all day. I did a number of drawings, some straight with pen – Posted are my favorites of the batch. These are done on Canson Classic Cream at 14 x 17 inches. Also managed to work out a couple of concrete ideas for paintings.

3rd one up. This one, as a choice for subject matter, is an unusual one for me. Generally I would try and avoid a beach/ocean scene, but thought I would push some paint around with it and see what I came up with. Measures 24" x 36".

At the start of the new year here, while I'm getting sorted out in my head exactly what I want to get up and running on, I thought I would paint a few landscapes to keep my hand active. So, here are two starts, very early on – about the 2nd pass. They're on the studio floor here because I just laid on some heavy glaze in a few areas. I'll be sure to post them again, at least when they're finished. I often do some landscapes after a larger body of work (in this case, having recently wrapped up solo exhibitions in LA and Berlin) and need a break from the taxing efforts of working with the figure.

Berlin Solo Exhibition

All work has been crated and shipped and I'm making final preparations now to leave next week for Berlin for my solo show at Merry Karnowsky Gallery Berlin.
